I'd be careful stating something so general as "anime is deep" and "anime is not just for kids". Anime is a huge variety of things. Similar to me saying movies (non-animated) are deep and for adults. While this can be the case, it is not always. There are animes that fall so flat, it compares to the antics of Coyote and Roadrunner from Warner Brothers.

Also, the world certainly is now recognizing anime and manga for not being just for kids. But probably not in the way you'd like. They are actually being grouped together as porn more often than not in politics... Of course, video games are suffering from the same fate.

You also have to remember other cultures are limited to what they see and whats the popular thing that points a certain area.

Of course thier more to asia, but do you really think that many people are interested in finding out more than whats put out infront of them?

i strongly agree with this statement.

it seems that in the past, (and certainly now, more than ever) that when i spoke with friends and aquaintances who never really looked into anime seriously before, or never followed it closely, they would always refer to it as being associated with the porn industry and the like...plus, at least in my area, i have noticed that in most stores that sell anime merchandise and et cetera usually have a warning posted about most products in that category being for individuals 18 or older...it somewhat sad, really, but it seems that not only in america or japan, but worldwide - sex sells more than anything else ever will.

not sure if it is true, or not, but i have heard that in some states in america, that talk of anime being banned was in the works...? now, i am not sure if that means restricted sales, or whatnot (pssht, yet again, it could just be ignorant word of mouth), but i was surpised to hear about it...has anyone else heard about this issue?

I live in Iowa and know many people who enjoy anime, heck I'm 41 and enjoy it. I think much of the "for kids" idea comes from the fact that most anime shown on TV here, is Pokamon and the like. You have to go looking around to get the more serious stuff.

Anime is a primary medium in Japan to express storylines, so they have a wide varity of different types. I think this orginates from after WW2 when they lacked the resources to put out lavish productions and used "anime" as a less exspensive alternative.

I'm always looked down upon when I say I like anime, especially now that i'm in college. But my solution is to not pay attention to them, I mean, what do they do in their lives that makes them so mature? Have casual sex with whatever person they find, play M rated games and go to parties and drink beer until they pass out?

Sorry...that's not "mature" not for me.

most people i know dont even know what anime is, and if they do they only know it as Naruto which drives me crazy cause 1 Naruto is not the only anime in the world and 2 I just hate it. And people who do know what anime thinks it stupid and totally waste of time or they relate it to a stupid crappy american cartoon and get all mad when i tell them its not like that at all and that its better :/ i hate americans lol

Why cant they understand that not everything in Asia has to do with Chinese and that anime isn't just some low-class cartoons?
What exactly are they discriminating against? Why do they feel that ainime/manga are just for little kids and arent able to accept the fact that they aren't age restricted in any way, and can be seen/read by older viewers? Why don't they know that the art and profundity of anime cannot be compared to a barren and monotonous reality? 1/4 of the world population on earth watch anime/manga. Japan is one of the most powerful countries in the world and possibly only second against the US.

Was it the right move to make a thread regarding a sensitive issue? Will it spark off tension, havoc and internal wars? I don't know anymore.. Z_Z

Greetings ..

Fist of all , I Agree with your prospective about being angry toward those who know nothing about the Evolutionary Visions of the anime and I'm sharing with you the enthusiasm As A anime Admirer ..

But you know , Ignorance is a Blessing .. If u know what I mean

I know that u can't stand the idea that there are people who screw up the ideals and the Creativity of the Manga Creation ..

So keep your head up and remain calm and cold .. u can face them wisely.

Nice work My friend , Keep it up

Have a nice day

No, you were right, people who are not open-minded often look down on you and label you as "anime-wannabe freak, don't touch" and just can't wrap their minds around the fact that maybe you JUST LIKE IT BECAUSE YOU DO,AND IT DOESN"T MEAN YOU"RE DUMB!!! Like, I made honor roll last term, and people were all like "Ooh, thats surprising...and im like "What? Why?" And they were like "because all you do is read comic books!" I got so mad! anyway, i've learned that people who don't bother to observe the difference between "comic books/manga" and "cartoons/anime" aren't really worth arguing with.
